On Sunday 22 June (1 Tir), just hours after an airstrike on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear installations, US Vice President J.D. Vance told NBC News:
“We are not at war with Iran. We are at war with Iran’s nuclear programme.”
At this moment, neither the United States nor Israel nor Europe has a plan to topple Khamenei. And yet, as they have clearly stated, he is within their reach. They could assassinate him, but for now, they are choosing not to pull the trigger.
Is this merely a political bluff? Is access to Khamenei truly impossible for intelligence agencies? All evidence suggests otherwise. Israel has proven time and again that it can eliminate any regime figure it chooses.
At present, large areas across Iran — primarily nuclear sites and military facilities — have been struck hard by Israeli forces. Air defence units have also been targeted. According to Israel’s government, if the regime surrenders now, the missile strikes and aerial bombardments will cease. It would not be far-fetched to imagine Israel declaring victory and halting further attacks.
Such an outcome would also be a major victory for the people of Iran. If the regime, under heavy military pressure, retreats and halts its uranium enrichment efforts, it would energise the public — emboldening society to rise against the regime with a hundred times more determination. A weakened regime, driven to the brink of collapse, would no longer be able to launch wide-scale repression.
In the past two decades — and especially over the past three years — the people of Iran have built up a long record of direct confrontation with the Islamic Republic. The regime’s defeat in the nuclear arena could mark the beginning of a new phase of popular uprising.
Now more than ever, the revolutionary ranks of the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement must be fully prepared. Through coordination among people’s networks, political parties, and existing revolutionary organisations — with communist and workers’ groups at the forefront — we must confront the regime’s existence and bring it to an end. Let us be fully organised and ready for the final battle.
