Checkpoint Orders, Now in Writing -Journal -2 July 2025

Ebrahim Jabbari, an advisor to the Commander-in-Chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, commenting on the recent 12-day war, declared: “We knew the only thing that could bring down the regime was internal pressure. That’s why we focused our strategy on the domestic front.”

A citizen from Sanandaj told Iran International in a voice message: “There are checkpoints all over the city. They stopped my son’s car and searched it for hours, without any reason.”

When IRGC commanders were being eliminated one after another, many said it plainly: the force capable of bringing down the regime is not foreign—it is the people inside Iran. That is why, before retreating into the safety of his rat-hole, Khamenei issued his final directive: shut down the internet, threaten political prisoners with death, arrest those who expose the regime on social media or chant “Death to Khamenei,” and label them Mossad agents. And finally, set up checkpoints across the country.

Since the beginning of this war, the regime has entrenched itself behind three defensive lines against its own people: internet shutdowns, militarised checkpoints, and the new law on “enhanced punishment for spies and collaborators with Israel.” This is the true front of the war currently raging inside Iran.

Yes, the Islamic Republic has correctly identified the revolutionary and anti-regime people of Iran as its greatest threat. The 12-day war with Israel has ended in a heap of slain IRGC commanders. But the greater war—between the people and the regime—is far from over.

And the regime is not equipped for this battle. One of its critical vulnerabilities is internal discord. Another is the severe military blows it has suffered and the dismantling of its nuclear programme. In short, this is a society wracked by poverty, inequality and dictatorship—yet one that has delivered devastating blows to the regime in its most recent uprising and has accumulated vital experience in the process. Such a society cannot be subdued with a few checkpoints or new legislation branding dissenters as enemies of God.

The story remains the same: the fall of the Islamic Republic lies in the hands of Iran’s revolutionary people. And that is the regime’s greatest nightmare—one that robs its leaders of sleep.
