Araqchi and “National Pride” – Hassan Salehi-3 July 2025

PDF-English Journal-3 July 2025-No15

Abbas Araqchi, the Islamic Republic’s foreign minister, spoke to CBS with such theatrical zeal about uranium enrichment that one might think Iran has no other pain or problem, and our entire sense of “national pride” depends on this one achievement. He proudly claims that the Islamic Republic fought for enrichment and that this is a source of pride.

But he didn’t bother to explain exactly where this pride can be spent. Perhaps it can buy us cleaner air, or import some happiness, freedom and prosperity into the country? Or maybe what he really means is that this pride is to be spent on the regime’s survival and its nuclear ambitions—projects that not only threaten the people of Iran, but increasingly endanger the rest of the world as well.

The irony is that whenever “national pride” is invoked, no one seems to care that instead of oxygen, Iranians are inhaling a cocktail of smoke, lead and fine particulate matter—and many die each year from this “glorious” air.

“National pride” has nothing to do with the joy and wellbeing of the people. If it did, the Islamic Republic—with its stellar rankings among the world’s most miserable nations—would have destroyed it completely.

As for democracy and freedom, let’s not forget: our pride is so great we suppress protesters both in the streets and in prison. The education and welfare systems resemble post-apocalyptic films.

And environmental protection? That too has been sacrificed on the altar of national pride. Trees are felled, wetlands drained, forests turned to smoke—so we can enrich uranium and bask in our own sense of self-importance.

To Mr Araqchi, we say: keep your “national pride.” We don’t want it. Not the enrichment, not the nuclear energy, not the ballistic missiles. They’ve brought nothing but misery and ruin. Our pride lies in freedom and gender equality, not in prisons and humiliation. Our honour is when people live in safety, not slaughter. Our true pride is when citizens live in liberty and prosperity—not in the Islamic hell you’ve created. Our joy is our revolution and the celebration of your downfall. That is our real pride.
