Alaeddin Boroujerdi, a member of Iran’s national security and foreign policy commission, recently declared: “In many countries—even major ones—during security crises, they lower the internet ‘flame’ and impose restrictions.” He added: “It’s a necessity. Without security, ordinary life is disrupted. So if the government or parliament imposes limits, it’s for society’s own good.”
Boroujerdi insists that previous experience shows such security measures will reduce future problems. This man seems to live in the oil lamp era; otherwise, he would have known to use terms relevant to the digital age.
This shameless statement lays bare the regime’s only concern: its own survival. They care nothing for the safety and well-being of the people. It takes a particular brand of callousness to ignore the simple truth that in times of war or natural disasters, a robust information system is crucial to saving lives.
During this 12-day conflict, the entire country failed to provide even a single air raid siren or shelter for civilians. And yet, instinctively—“genetically”—they remembered to shut down the internet. The regime knows perfectly well that cutting off access is about securing the state, not protecting the public. In one word, regime “security” means utter insecurity for Iranian citizens. Only through revolution and the downfall of this regime can true safety be achieved.
If we were permitted to speak in their own language to “make them understand,” we’d say: only a revolution can permanently “lower the wick” of these gentlemen—extinguishing their lamps and hearths for generations to come. Only then will society know peace and safety.
