23rd Khordad (12 June) will remain etched in Iran’s historical memory. In the early hours of that Saturday morning, the Islamic regime trembled as several of its top military commanders were killed in the blink of an eye. The precision in locating and striking their hideouts left military, intelligence, and security analysts stunned. But most bewildered of all were the regime’s remaining officials—and Khamenei himself—who are now grappling with the shocking extent of infiltration into the heart of their fortress. They ask themselves: how did we end up so defenceless in the face of such a devastating blow?
The magnitude of this breach, however, is not solely the result of military or intelligence operations. The truth is simpler, and starker: the regime is collapsing from within. As time goes on, these kinds of targeted operations—eliminating the regime’s leadership—will only become easier. Khamenei himself could easily be next. The question is not if, but when, and under what conditions the plot to kill him will be devised and carried out. One such condition could be the regime’s continued insistence on pursuing its nuclear project.
But the story doesn’t end there. After the initial elimination of the regime’s top commanders, the precision strikes continued. On the final day before a ceasefire, yet another of the regime’s nuclear scientists was assassinated. What most reveals the regime’s pitiful condition is not just the ease with which these figures were targeted—it’s the fact that, for twelve days, Israeli air power maintained control over Tehran itself. And this wasn’t just a military event.
The Islamic regime now faces an existential crisis. It can no longer contain the people. On the contrary, political and cultural resistance to the Islamic Republic grows broader by the day. The widespread rejection of the regime by society has hollowed it out, leaving it weaker and more fragmented with each passing moment.
If we accept that the regime’s crisis stems from a society that seeks its downfall, then we must rally that very society towards a strategic, deliberate overthrow. This is where the real challenge begins—for us, the people. Yet significant strides have already been made. In the next issue, we will outline the next steps towards regime change.
