The situation of Evin prison’s detainees has worsened following their forced transfer to Qarchak prison. Reports suggest that phone access and visitation rights may be cut as tensions escalate. Even leave permissions, previously approved, were abruptly revoked a day before the transfer.
Let us start with that last point: the cancellation of leave. The Islamic Republic, gripped by panic after Israel’s initial strike, revoked furloughs out of fear that these prisoners could—should the balance of power shift—play a crucial role in mobilising and directing public resistance. Once again, we’re faced with the regime’s enduring fear of its most dangerous enemy: the enemy within. More threatening to the regime’s survival than any foreign force are those who stand against it from inside.
The transfer of these inmates to Qarchak—an overcrowded, unsanitary facility with no basic amenities—was a deliberate act of punishment. Yet the response of political prisoners has been one of defiance. Rising tensions within the prison speak to their resolve. These individuals, even behind bars, refuse to yield. Their resilience mirrors the broader spirit of Iranian society: a society that sees its rulers as small, as contemptible, and refuses to miss any opportunity to challenge them.
Now, more than ever, we must be the voice of these prisoners. Let us inform society of what is happening inside the prisons, and ensure the world—especially international human rights groups—hears the reports from Qarchak. Let us learn from these political prisoners who, from behind bars, continue to confront the Islamic Republic with unmatched courage and clarity. Let us spread their spirit of resistance across society at large.
By rallying around the slogan “Political prisoners must be freed”, we can strengthen the revolutionary movement of Woman, Life, Freedom.
