Previously, we reported that on Tuesday, June 22, Israel’s fascist government launched a missile attack on Evin Prison. According to regime-affiliated sources and the judiciary spokesperson Asghar Jahangir, 71 people were killed. While the exact death toll is unclear, it’s evident most of the casualties were prison staff, though some prisoners and their family members were among the dead. The regime refuses to release the names of the deceased or the wounded.
Reza Khandan Mahabadi, writer and member of the Iranian Writers’ Association, announced on Instagram the death of his ex-wife, Mehrangiz Imanpour, who lived near the blast site. We extend condolences to Khandan, his children, and Imanpour’s family.
The Worker-communist Party, while condemning the Israeli government’s crime in attacking Evin Prison, once again declares that ending the killing contest between the two governments of the Islamic Republic and Israel is our own people’s job. We declare that the war-mongering Islamic regime in Iran must be overthrown. The Islamic Republic is also obligated to publicly announce the names of the prisoners and families of the deceased, as well as the wounded and injured.
Reports indicate that in the aftermath, the Islamic Republic transferred detainees to even harsher facilities, and families are left in the dark about their whereabouts. In fear of a rising uprising, the regime has ramped up executions, mass arrests under the label of “spying for Israel,” and intensified repression of social and labour activists.
But various social groups are fighting back. The Iranian Retirees Council, “Don’t Execute” campaign, Dadehkhahan, and the Tehran Bus Workers’ Syndicate have condemned the repression and demanded an end to arrests and executions. A powerful campaign to free political prisoners and halt executions is an urgent step forward for the Woman, Life, Freedom revolution.
