Cardboard Fatwas Like Cardboard Effigies- Keyvan Javid-1 july 2025

Alireza Panahian, a cleric affiliated with Khamenei’s office, welcomed the recent fatwas by some Shia Muslim leaders, declaring Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu “enemies of God” (mohareb) for allegedly threatening Ali Khamenei. He stated that according to these rulings, “Every Muslim, anywhere in the world, must be willing to give their life to kill them.”

These new fatwas are no different from the cardboard cut-outs of Khomeini, Raisi, and Khamenei that appear at funerals for slain commanders of the Islamic Republic. The older the regime becomes, the more its terrorist posturing degenerates into political farce. This latest display by religious leaders is a desperate attempt to mask the profound humiliation that now defines the Islamic Republic’s current condition. The aim is to project strength—especially to the Iranian public—by evoking memories of past moments when the regime, like during Khomeini’s infamous fatwa against the lone writer Salman Rushdie, seemed at the “height of its power,” capable of mobilising the global forces of political Islam.

That illusion could not be further from today’s reality. The Islamic Republic is embroiled in a fierce, all-encompassing struggle with the people of Iran. It lacks a unified, commanding leadership. It is mired in economic ruin. And it faces a society rising to its feet—ready, at any moment, to turn breadline protests and workers’ strikes into a full-scale street war against the state.

The Islamic Republic has suffered its greatest cultural defeat. It now faces an entire army—armed not with weapons, but with unveiled hair. The “Woman, Life, Freedom” revolution was no passing thunderstorm in a cloudless sky. It was the result of a sustained, multidimensional struggle—political, cultural, and economic—against the regime. And this revolutionary movement is determined to regroup and reorganise itself with even more strength. This time, it will move forward with greater experience, with broader popular participation, and with a wider network of citizens engaged in social campaigns and resistance initiatives. And who knows—perhaps this wave will rally behind a revolutionary political party capable of providing both ideological and strategic leadership, guiding society hand in hand toward freedom, equality, and humanity, and finally bringing this regime to an end.
