In the wake of its defeat and humiliation in the war with Israel, the Islamic Republic responded not with reflection or restraint, but with open fascism—launching a campaign of mass deportation and inhumane treatment against Afghan refugees. This shameful purge, brutal in execution and utterly devoid of humanity, has drawn widespread condemnation. Political parties, civil organisations, public figures in Iran and Afghanistan, and a wide swathe of ordinary people have denounced the regime’s actions. The silence—or worse, the complicity—of Iranian chauvinists only further exposes the reactionary and anti-human character of this nationalist camp.
The regime’s treatment of Afghan migrants—herding them into grim camps, subjecting them to mass expulsions under appalling conditions—shocks the conscience. It is an act so cruel that anyone with even a flicker of humanity would feel outrage. And yet, amidst this darkness, something remarkable has emerged: solidarity. A profound, moving sense of empathy has surfaced among ordinary people.
In recent days, several acts of compassion have made headlines. Citizens in Zahedan sent food and water to Afghan refugees held in the al-Ghadir camp. Volunteers offered aid. People in Herat rushed to support deportees. Residents of Kerman mobilised to deliver essentials to detained Afghans. More than 1,300 artists, writers, activists and citizens from both Iran and Afghanistan signed an open letter condemning the regime’s anti-human policies.
Images of hundreds of cars lining up from Herat to the border to help displaced families, of people in Zahedan and Kerman sharing their food and homes, of Afghans opening their doors to strangers in need—these are glimpses of something precious. They remind us that humanity is not lost. They prove that when the people—not the ruling elites—take charge, generosity and solidarity blossom. They reveal the dormant strength of compassion, creativity, and collective care.
This beautiful display of human dignity must be cherished, studied, and mobilised. It is a powerful force—one we must carry forward into broader social struggles, organise around, and amplify.
