“Death to the Dictator”: A Slogan Echoes from Tehran’s Main Prison-Keyvan Javid-13 July 2025

PDF-English Journal-13 July 2025-No22

On the morning of Saturday, July 12, a planned visit by Heshmatollah Hayat al-Ghaib, head of Tehran Province’s prison organisation, to the Greater Tehran Penitentiary was cut short after inmates erupted in protest, chanting “Death to the dictator”. Political prisoners, decrying the dire and worsening conditions inside the prison, forced the regime official and his entourage to retreat from Hall 9 of Section 2.

Through the Islamic Republic’s propaganda lens, it might appear that the regime has grown stronger in its repression following Israel’s 12-day war. The threats against the public are relentless. Authorities are vowing to reimpose compulsory hijab by force, deploying sweeping security patrols, and passing draconian laws to punish any criticism of the regime with maximum severity. They have even promised a return to the mass executions of political prisoners seen in the 1980s. These are attempts to silence a population that has had enough of living in hell.

But the attempt to instil fear is collapsing under the weight of resistance. The prison protest was a theatrical farce for the regime and a powerful moment of pride and joy for the people.

The situation is not as the regime desperately tries to portray. The flames of popular rage are everywhere. Struggle does not require taking to the streets on a single day. Across society, the fight for a humane life is gaining ground. This fight can and must grow more organised, more widespread, and shaped by clearer demands. These defiant moments—this time from within the prison walls—are harbingers of a broader, unified resistance. Our social needs, plundered by this regime, must now serve as the basis for building organised tools of struggle: from large councils to local neighbourhood networks, to robust civil and social movements. Let us fully embody the slogan “Woman, Life, Freedom”.
