UN Secretary-General António Guterres has described Gaza as “hell on earth”—a hell brought about by Israel’s fascist government under the leadership of Benjamin Netanyahu, targeting a defenceless population.
Today, Gaza lies in ruins. Over 70% of residential buildings have been either completely destroyed or severely damaged. Neighbourhoods and cities such as Shuja’iyya, Khan Yunis, and Rafah have been all but wiped off the map by months of relentless bombardment—by land, air, and sea. Critical infrastructure—hospitals, schools, water systems, sewage networks, clinics, and power stations—have either been obliterated or rendered inoperable. Over 90% of Gaza’s population is now displaced, many forced to survive in temporary shelters or under open skies in inhumane conditions.
Gaza stands on the brink of full-scale famine. Medicine, drinking water, fuel, and food are dangerously scarce, and the humanitarian aid pipeline is virtually paralysed. The Israeli occupying army has actively blocked and sabotaged relief efforts, turning even the few distribution points that do exist into zones of massacre.
According to the UN Human Rights Office (OHCHR), 875 deaths have been recorded at aid distribution points in just six weeks. Total casualties from Israeli military attacks now exceed 65,000 dead and 142,000 injured—figures that still fail to capture the true scale of the catastrophe.
These atrocities are not hidden away in death camps, as with the Nazis’ massacre of Jews during the Second World War. They unfold in full view of the world, in front of cameras. Today, the perpetrators of these crimes even boast about them shamelessly and publicly.
All this horror is unfolding under the guise of fighting Islamic forces supported by the Islamic Republic of Iran—forces whose 7 October attack helped ignite this genocide. The Islamic Republic, Hamas, and other Islamist terrorist groups are no less guilty of crimes than Netanyahu’s government. If their victim count is smaller, it is only because they lack the military means. Every slaughtering force commits atrocities to the extent of its capacity.
Hostage-taking is one of the many forms of barbarism employed by Islamist groups. Yet no conscious observer can believe that the Israeli state’s brutal campaign is genuinely about rescuing the 50 or so remaining hostages held by Hamas—who must, unquestionably, be released. What is happening in Gaza is undeniably a case of genocide and ethnic cleansing. It must be named as such—and fiercely condemned.
Millions across the globe have already taken to the streets in solidarity with the Palestinian people, demanding governments apply maximum pressure on Israel to halt the carnage Foreign ministers from 25 countries—including Italy, France, Austria, the UK, Belgium, and Canada—have also issued a joint statement, though unjustifiably belatedly, calling for an immediate end to the killing of civilians in Gaza. This shows that global protest can be a powerful force in ending this anti-human war on Palestinians.
The United States, as Israel’s primary political and military backer, must also be subjected to all-sided pressure to end its support.
The Worker-communist Party of Iran stands with the oppressed people of Palestine. We demand an immediate halt to Israeli attacks on Gaza, the prompt withdrawal of occupying Israeli forces, and full recognition of a Palestinian state. The people of Palestine have the right to sovereignty in their own land, and the Israeli government must recognise this right.
We do not see Hamas as the representative of the Palestinian people but rather as a reactionary, terrorist force. We firmly support the creation of an independent Palestinian state—equal to Israel—based on secular and democratic principles.
