On 12 August 2025, the Financial Times reported that France, Germany and the UK had sent a formal letter to the UN Security Council and the Secretary-General warning that if the Islamic Republic did not return to negotiations, they would activate the snapback mechanism.
The snapback mechanism, part of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), allows permanent members of the UN Security Council to reimpose previous UN sanctions without a vote if Iran is deemed to have violated its commitments. Only one decision in the Security Council can trigger it, leading to the sudden return of sanctions.
This was built into the nuclear talks between the Islamic Republic and the P5+1 to ensure Tehran kept its commitments. After the JCPOA was signed in 2015, UN Security Council Resolution 2231 formally incorporated the mechanism into international law.
But it is not only the snapback mechanism that is being primed. Dozens of guns and missiles are aimed at the Islamic Republic. And these weapons do not threaten only the regime’s survival. The crises engulfing Iran directly target the lives of its people, dragging society towards a “dark age”.
The root cause of this misery is the Islamic Republic itself — a regime propped up by state terrorism and a source of insecurity across the region. It has helped spill blood in Gaza by providing financial and military backing to Hamas, allowing Netanyahu’s fascist government to regain strength and slaughter Gazans. It has carried out bombings and political assassinations against activists in Iraq. It was behind the bombing of the Argentine Jewish Mutual Association in which 85 people were killed and more than 300 injured.
The Islamic Republic must be brought down by the force of the Iranian people’s revolution, ending terrorism in the region. Only then will the world engage with Iranians on an equal footing. Let us prevent the triggers from being pulled by toppling this regime.
