On Sunday 17 August 2025, hundreds of thousands of Israelis took to the streets demanding an end to the war in Gaza and the return of hostages still held by Hamas. A one-day strike was called on 17 August by the families of some of the hostages. Reports indicate that some 500,000 people participated, chanting ‘Bring them all home’ and ‘Stop the war.’
The devastating nightmare of this war began with Hamas’s attack on Israel on 7 October 2023, which killed around 1,200 people and led to the taking of 251 hostages.
This crime by Hamas, fully backed by the Islamic Republic and the Islamist movement, handed a historic opportunity to Netanyahu’s far-right government, which, with the help of religious and ultra-nationalist parties, has perpetrated the greatest war crime in decades.
The result of this reactionary conflict, driven by the most inhumane forces on both sides, has been tens of thousands of deaths, mass displacement and hunger affecting millions – devastation that continues.
It is now clear that the war is also opposed by millions within Israel itself. Humanity in Israel is a growing and reliable force, one that enemies of humanity everywhere must reckon with.
The protests that erupted worldwide from the early days of the war shone a light at the end of the tunnel, seeking to halt the genocide of Gaza’s people. Today, with the massive demonstrations inside Israel, we see an even more hopeful picture of humanity mobilised to end the slaughter.
A lasting end to this mass killing and crime against humanity in Palestine is only possible through the creation of two equal states – Palestinian and Israeli – in which both can coexist, and where Israel’s ruling fascists and the reactionary Islamist movement are both cast aside, ending the nightmare of death and destruction.
Down with Israel’s fascist government – down with the reactionary Islamist movement.
