Mohammad Najafi, a lawyer and political prisoner in Evin, has sent a message to Khamenei declaring that only one path remains to save Iran: ‘Resign, or die.’
This message is a testament to Najafi’s courage and defiance – a free-minded lawyer who, even from behind the bars of the Islamic Republic, dares to confront its criminal leader. Such bold dissent from inside Iran’s prisons reflects the depth of discontent and the spread of protest across society.
Today, broad layers of the population are openly in conflict with the regime. The Islamic Republic has targeted people’s lives and existence to force submission. But instead of submission, a wave of protest has engulfed the country. Oil workers have returned to the frontlines, pensioners gather weekly, health staff and nurses prepare for larger actions. Voices are rising against environmental destruction and recurring cuts to power and water. Women are defying compulsory hijab as they fight for all their human rights. City walls are covered with slogans calling for the overthrow of the regime, opposing executions and demanding freedom for political prisoners. People are challenging the regime’s warmongering with chants such as ‘We want neither war nor slaughter – we want lasting welfare,’ and ‘Enriching life is our inalienable right.’ These are only fragments of the ongoing resistance.
Most importantly, repression, torture and executions have lost their power. The regime increases executions in a bid to terrify society, but it has failed. Today, it is the government itself that lives in perpetual fear of another popular uprising.
Najafi’s message from prison is the voice of millions. This regime must go if society is to avoid further ruin. With the determination and power of the people, the path can be cleared for freedom, welfare and dignity.
As we approach the third anniversary of the ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’ uprising, unity and solidarity can merge scattered streams of resistance into a powerful flood to uproot tyranny and oppression.
