Nigel Farage, leader of the far-right Reform UK party, said at a launch event for his party’s plan for mass deportations of undocumented migrants: “Let me be clear. No young Iranian who arrives by boat should be walking freely on the streets of our country.”
Once again, Reform UK under Farage’s leadership exploits xenophobic and fascistic rhetoric to pin Britain’s deep structural crises on refugees. By focusing on so-called “illegal” migrants and refugees—particularly from the Middle East, such as Iranians—Farage seeks to distract the public from deeper problems: cuts to public services, the housing crisis, growing poverty, and entrenched inequality. The fact is, his party has no solutions that benefit ordinary people.
With provocative remarks such as “no young Iranian should walk our streets freely”, Farage not only dehumanises migrants but deliberately ignores the catastrophic political and economic conditions in their countries of origin. He denies the role of powerful Western states, including Britain, in creating this devastation. His rhetoric—echoing the fascist propaganda of the 20th century before the Refugee Conventions—tries to manufacture an ‘internal enemy’ on which public anger, fostered by decades of austerity and injustice, can be unloaded.
Instead of questioning entrenched inequalities in British capitalism—privatised education, healthcare and transport, chronic shortages of social housing, and the collapse of the welfare system—Reform UK scapegoats migrants. Its anti-immigrant policies are not solutions, but tools to stir nationalism and harvest the votes of disaffected citizens.
The assault on international human rights treaties and the undermining of fundamental asylum principles not only signal an authoritarian turn but also threaten social freedoms and human values within Britain itself. Ultimately, Farage and his party demonise migrants to preserve the existing order. The voice of English fascism today emerges from Farage and his allies.
