During a military parade in China, Iranian president Pezeshkian refused to shake hands with the wife of the Chinese president. He appeared accompanied by his daughter, shrouded in a chador.
This man is a cardiologist. By the nature of his profession, touching or shaking hands with women should be routine. But Pezeshkian is trained in Islam, where in appearance he must avoid physical contact with unrelated women. We say ‘in appearance’, because it is no secret that this group is among the most dangerous to women. Figures like Ali Motahari and other Islamic ideologues are so overcome by lust at the sight of a strand of hair or a woman’s navel that their solution is to chain women.
Amid seas of unveiled women in China, only two or three Islamic reactionaries stood out—Pezeshkian and his daughter, and Erdoğan with his veiled wife. At least Erdoğan has the sense to shake hands with the Chinese president’s wife, though of course his wife is forbidden from touching unrelated men.
Pezeshkian faces more than one problem. He must prove himself a cultural reactionary in public, while also appeasing clerics and regime rivals. He must demonstrate that he is no less backward than those clerics for whom polygamy and serial temporary marriages are a way of life.
Islam is not just another form of backwardness, like cow worship or idolatry. It is a lethal weapon that takes human lives on a vast scale. When it attains state power, it becomes murderous, and its greatest victims are women.
These thugs, these anti-human viruses, should have no place in society. Compared with state-sponsored religion, all other epidemics are trivial. Pezeshkian and his government have no place among the people of Iran.
