As of Monday 1 September, more than 800 people have been reported dead in a magnitude six earthquake in eastern Kunar province. More than 2,500 have been injured. The epicentre was in a remote mountainous region, making relief operations difficult.
In this quake—which, it must be noted, was not particularly strong—the widespread poverty and weak, substandard housing led to entire villages being destroyed, while others suffered heavy damage. Given the already poor transport links, the toll of dead and wounded will likely be even higher.
Warning and relief: The survivors of this preventable tragedy are among the poorest people on Earth. Deprived of the joys of life, they now urgently need help from the world’s people, especially those in neighbouring countries. Governments must be compelled to send all available resources to aid the survivors of this human disaster. Remember, in Pezeshkian’s short time in government, 1.8 million Afghans have already been expelled and sent into Taliban hell.
The earthquake victims in eastern Kunar province are in desperate need of medical supplies, food and shelter. Since we know the Taliban, like Iran’s rulers, are thieves and anti-human, aid must go directly and immediately to those in need. Globally coordinated emergency relief is urgent. Many remain trapped under rubble, and every possible effort must be made to rescue them.
Humanity is trapped beneath criminals and under layers of oppression. An earthquake of this scale would not have cost that many lives if the world were not in the hands of criminals.
* Updated figures: 2200 people confirmed dead in the provinces of Nurgal, Suki, Chapa Dara, Pech Dara, Watapur and Asadabad; 3,124 injured; and more than 5,412 houses destroyed. However, the actual number is probably much higher and will be increasing as the Taliban forbids men to touch unrelated women, hence they will not be rescuing them from under the rubble. Many more women who could have been saved will be dying under the rubble.
