On Monday, 29 September, five UN special rapporteurs on human rights issued a joint statement warning: “The scale of executions in Iran is shocking and shows a grave violation of the right to life.” They noted that half of the recorded executions were linked to drug-related offences, and in recent weeks several executions have been taking place each day. The UN experts stressed that the international community cannot remain silent in the face of such systematic abuses, and that states must take specific diplomatic steps to halt this wave of killings.

Since the start of this year until 30 September, more than 1,035 people have been executed in Iran, according to the UN Human Rights Office. The figure continues to climb. By the end of the year, executions are projected to reach between 1,400 and 1,500—an unprecedented level in the past three decades.

The experts are right: the international community must not remain silent. Yet, tragically, no serious action is being taken. The United Nations itself is shamefully collaborating with the Islamic Republic on drug control. This cooperation not only lends legitimacy to the regime’s executions, but through financial and logistical support, has directly enabled even more killings.

If the world were truly governed by justice and humanity, and if leaders genuinely cared about human rights, they would long ago have intervened to stop the Islamic Republic’s daily crimes. Words and condemnations are not enough. The global community can—and must—support the struggles of political prisoners, anti-execution movements in Iran, and the families of those condemned. Western governments could recall their ambassadors from Tehran and make any negotiations conditional on an immediate halt to executions. The leaders of the Islamic Republic could be prosecuted at the International Criminal Court and arrested rather than welcomed on official visits. The list of possible measures is long, but the political will to pursue them is absent.

Only through relentless protest and sustained pressure can the cycle of silence and indifference be broken, and the Islamic Republic forced back. The true allies of the Iranian people are citizens of the world who, during the Woman, Life, Freedom uprising, offered their solidarity with extraordinary warmth. This same force can become a powerful lever for intensifying global pressure on the regime to end executions in Iran.
