Mohammad-Mehdi Mandegari, a ‘seminary scholar,’ recently justified compulsory hijab by saying: “The eye sees, the heart desires, the hand cannot reach — this is frustration. Reason supports hijab, and the Qur’an confirms it.”
This statement reeks of a sexually diseased mind — the mentality of a predator who, upon seeing a woman, instantly translates desire into imagined assault. The entire patriarchal, gender-obsessed framework of Islam turns women into beings who must hide indoors, avoid greeting men, avoid cycling or riding motorbikes lest they “arouse” Muslim men who have inherited their sexual pathology from the Prophet and the imams. Women must not work, must forgo study and university. If today the clerics cannot openly declare that women must stay indoors or be barred from education and employment, it is not due to any progress in their thinking, but because modern Iranian society has smacked down these Islamist viruses.
In their “Islamic Republic,” millions of women live together with men without being married, have sexual relationships, appear unveiled in public, study in schools and universities, and go to work. Each of these women, by merely existing freely, defies the patriarchal Islamic gaze.
This blindness characterises this cabal of backward, misogynist Islamists. They have spent their lives in religious seminaries poring over Khomeini’s Tawdih al-Masael, learning the so-called “rules” for sexual relations with infants, the treatment of bestiality, and fatwas on what happens if a man falls on his aunt or niece during an earthquake and impregnates her.
In societies where women go unveiled — even sunbathe or swim topless — no one attacks or even ogles them. When harassment occurs, it stems from the same religious, patriarchal sickness that these clerics propagate.
In Iran, both the ideology and practice of Islamic patriarchy will be swept away, replaced by a culture of humanity and mutual respect. But first, the Islamic Republic must be overthrown.
