On Monday, 13 October, all twenty surviving Israeli hostages held by Hamas were released. In exchange, the Israeli government freed 1,970 Palestinian prisoners.
The ceasefire has allowed Israeli forces to withdraw from parts of Gaza and has opened the way for water and food to reach a starving and parched population. In recent days, tens of thousands of displaced Gazans—by any means available, many on foot—have begun returning home, carrying with them the unhealed grief of losing tens of thousands of loved ones.
This is a victory for the people of the world—ordinary people who, throughout this filthy and ruinous war, refused to remain silent and took to the streets in protest, pressuring their governments to act against the genocide in Gaza. Two decisive factors have brought about this ceasefire.
First, Western governments, particularly the United States, under pressure from humanist citizens around the world, have taken a more critical stance toward Netanyahu’s inhuman administration. A growing number of countries have voted in favour of recognising a Palestinian state. Israel’s government has become increasingly isolated, with unprecedented international pressure weighing upon it.
Second, the severe defeat of the so-called ‘axis of resistance’ led by the Islamic Republic – which includes Hamas as a key component – has been another major factor. The Iranian regime today is at its lowest ebb, both domestically and regionally. Inside Iran, it faces an rebellious society demanding its overthrow, alongside a devastating economic crisis and deepening internal divisions. Across the region, from Lebanon to Iraq and Yemen to Gaza, Tehran’s proxy network is in a state of humiliation and decline.
Nevertheless, the current ceasefire could quickly collapse. What remains unresolved is the recognition of two equal states, Palestinian and Israeli. Netanyahu’s fascist government continues to fiercely resist this humane and legitimate demand, while Hamas still refuses to disarm or relinquish power in Gaza. The future of this blood-soaked region will remain bleak and uncertain until a Palestinian state is established. In that direction, we must press forward -with all our strength.
