The secretary of the ‘Enjoining Good and Forbidding Evil’ headquarters in Tehran Province has announced the formation of a ‘Chastity Situation Room,’ saying: “With the activation of 80,000 trained personnel, a major transformation can be achieved in the province.” He added: “Through this Situation Room for Chastity and Hijab, enemy actions will be monitored and analysed, and cultural, media and legal strategies will be designed and communicated to relevant institutions.”
Neither God nor Satan, neither angels nor prophets, nor the Imams of Islam – nor any luminous or fearsome being from the 1,400-year history of Islam – have succeeded in persuading women in Iran to observe the Islamic veil. This is the clash of two vast historical and social forces: a battle between all the crimes of Islam and the liberating power of life itself.
This choice – the rejection of the hijab – was not born primarily from intellectual study or the writings of scholars, poets or Iranian thinkers. It arose from lived experience: from the suffocating backwardness, decay, denial of identity and the humiliation that women endure. It is the choice of ordinary people who cannot and will not sacrifice beauty, freedom and a human life to the gloom, servitude and social isolation imposed by Islamic bondage.
This great political and cultural struggle, which has tragically destroyed so many lives, is on the verge of sweeping away the Islamic Republic altogether. In this extraordinary social movement, the regime has not yet fully raised the white flag of surrender. The latest ‘Chastity Situation Room’ project – trumpeted by the Tehran headquarters of ‘Enjoining Good and Forbidding Evil’ – is nothing but the jackal’s howl of a dying beast, revealing its exhaustion more than its menace.
The flowing hair of women in Iran can no longer be bound beneath the filthy cloth of the Islamic hijab. That hair has become the very rope with which we climb the heights and set fire to the enemy’s nest. This struggle still has the strength to grow. Unveiling can, and must, spread even further.
