According to a Reuters report, “Hamas forces have intensified their repression of Palestinians and have executed at least 33 people accused of collaborating with Israel.” In one of the videos released, armed and masked Hamas militants drag seven men into a public square in Gaza, force them to their knees, and shoot them dead.
Public executions—this is Hamas’ first ‘gift’ to the people of Gaza at the beginning of what Donald Trump once called the “historic new dawn of the Middle East.” Trump had announced it in the Israeli Knesset, and it was later signed in a glittering ceremony in Sharm el-Sheikh by the leaders of governments that, to varying degrees, have all contributed to the continued misery of the Palestinian people. Some have done so by embracing the far-right rulers of Israel, others by nurturing and arming Hamas itself.
The massacre now unfolding in Gaza shows that Trump’s “peace plan” could never bring real peace to the region. One pillar of the Palestinians’ misery – Hamas – continues to rule Gaza with guns and terror, while the other – Netanyahu and the far-right Israeli establishment – has openly declared that it reached no agreement with Trump on a Palestinian state.
Trump claimed the war had ended and that Hamas merely wanted to maintain order. What is striking, however, is that his so-called “peace plan” appears to include secret clauses allowing Hamas to wield its weapons “to preserve order.” And that is precisely what Hamas is doing – preserving “order” through fear and execution, warning the people of Gaza that anyone who reports its crimes will be branded an Israeli spy and put to death. It is, in effect, the same method Khamenei uses in Iran.
The Palestinian question cannot reach a just and lasting solution so long as both reactionary forces – Islamic terrorism and Jewish ethno-fascism – dominate the political stage. These two currents feed each other: Hamas, Hezbollah and the turbaned rulers of Iran on one side; and, on the other, the flag-waving chauvinists around Netanyahu. Both claim the land “from the river to the sea” as their own, go to bed dreaming of drowning the “other people” in the sea, and wake up determined to make that nightmare real.
