A hunger strike by 1,500 prisoners in Ghezel Hesar lasting six days; bakers’ protests entering their sixth day and spilling into the streets; a surging wave of unveiled women rocking the Islamic Republic’s worn-out vessel – workers’ protests unceasing. The volcano of social unrest spews new molten sparks each day.
The regime’s defensive structures are cracking. Senior officials openly expose each other’s scandals, ready to turn their guns on one another. This deep internal conflict mirrors their loss of control over a populace that, despite daily executions and crushing poverty, refuses to abandon hope of the regime’s downfall.
Some shallow commentators, misnamed “sociologists”, claim Iranian society is hopeless and collapsing – a selfish jungle where each struggles only to survive. That may be one surface of a society forced to the brink, but it is not its essence. Time and again, these same people have united in extraordinary solidarity, driving this murderous and corrupt regime to the edge of overthrow.
Yes, the social body is scarred – addiction, prostitution, mental anguish, and countless ills abound – but these very people stand in remarkable harmony against the Islamic Republic, on every political, cultural, and economic front.
For this social volcano to burn away tyranny rather than the people themselves, there must be political and practical unity around a shared revolutionary programme – the kind proposed by the Worker-Communist Party in A Better World, its manifesto for a liberated society. It is this unique form of national and social unity whose banner the party has raised proudly “in the heart of the city”.
