The Islamic Republic has been forced to revoke the death sentence of Sharifeh Mohammadi, a labour activist and defender of women’s rights. This is a major success for the anti-execution movement in Iran.
However, in an effort to avoid acknowledging this retreat as a victory for the anti-execution movement, the authorities have retained the original charge of “baghi” — armed rebellion against the state — and commuted Sharifeh Mohammadi’s death sentence to 30 years in prison.
Such manoeuvres cannot diminish the success of our efforts to overturn Sharifeh Mohammadi’s death sentence. The authorities themselves know that this 30-year sentence for a political prisoner will, sooner or later, meet the same fate as her death sentence. Sharifeh Mohammadi has committed no crime; she has been an unequivocal defender of the rights of workers and women. She must be released immediately and unconditionally.
Her death sentence was revoked because you and I took to the streets, in our neighbourhoods and wherever we could, to defend her; because, in the protests of retired workers, the cry for her freedom — and that of other political prisoners — rang out; because we wrote her name on the walls of our cities and demanded her release; because dozens of civic organisations in Iran and major trade unions around the world — including the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) — rallied to support this labour activist and called for her freedom; because we built a global campaign to save Sharifeh Mohammadi, and in the end forced the Islamic Republic to back down.
This is our collective victory over a regime that sought to intimidate and silence us by escalating executions and repression. We stood against this barbarity, raised our voices, and showed that the power of solidarity is stronger than any weapon or threat.
This victory shows that when our voices come together, we can shatter the papier-mâché walls of repressive power. Now is the time to press on, to free Sharifeh Mohammadi and all political prisoners, and to abolish the inhuman punishment of execution in Iran.
