Dick Cheney, long-time Republican politician and former vice president to George W Bush from 2001-2009, died on 3rd of November. This is not an obituary – this is a lamentation. An expression of anguish that yet another ‘public servant’ in the endless succession of power-wielding malignant growths was able to survive his destructive legacy unscathed.
Cheney was central to the attack on Iraq and creating the US government’s ‘enhanced interrogation techniques’. He openly declared that waterboarding is acceptable and supported unlawful incarcerations in Guantanamo Bay. Years later he said he would do it all again.
I cannot be the only one to mourn the fact that Cheney was allowed to live and die in peace, something he actively took away from so many others. To mourn the fact that he was never held accountable for his actions in the war of terror that the US government unleashed onto the world.
People deserve better than Dick Cheney. I doubt that very many tears will have been shed by the public, and the ones that were, were not worth it.
