There are numerous signs indicating a rising likelihood of a U.S. military attack on Venezuela. The United States has placed a fifty-million-dollar bounty on the arrest of Venezuela’s president and, over recent months, has gradually deployed a large military force in the Caribbean. As a warm-up, the U.S. has so far destroyed 19 Venezuelan civilian vessels on charges of drug trafficking and has killed 76 innocent civilians—without evidence and without proving any crime.
On the other side, Venezuela, which is incapable of confronting the world’s foremost military power, has seen its only option in avoiding war and seeking accommodation. The New York Times reported that Maduro informed the U.S. last month that he is willing to hand over all future oil and gold contracts of Venezuela to American companies and terminate its agreements with Russia and China. But the United States is firmly determined to overthrow the Venezuelan government.
Given today’s chaotic global situation, such developments are hardly surprising. The U.S. has around 700 military bases worldwide, and the cost of its gigantic machinery of intimidation, extortion, and killing amounts to nearly one trillion dollars annually—most of which ends up in the pockets of five military monopolies. Today, the revenues of the arms industry rank first in the global economy. At the same time, we should not forget that militarism is a pillar of America’s official ideology and the cornerstone of its identity as a superpower.
Meanwhile, the United Nations—supposed to serve as a body for addressing territorial disputes and creating peace among nations—no longer plays a meaningful role in the world. This only paves the way further for the unchecked dominance of the world’s leading military powers.
Although the United States has not won any military conflict since World War II, a looming attack on Venezuela could have dangerous consequences. The people of Venezuela do not need U.S. military intervention to confront their country’s authoritarian regime; they must rely on their own strength.
American militarism can only be curbed by appealing to the consciences of decent people across the world. A widespread global protest is enough to make the warmongers understand that the people of the world will not allow another massacre to be repeated. A worldwide mobilization of people against militarism, the arms race, and military intimidation is the only means that can put an end to military bullying in the world.
