Elon Musk, CEO of car manufacturer Tesla, has, with the approval of shareholders, secured the largest executive pay and compensation package in history, amounting to one trillion dollars.
The approval of a trillion-dollar reward package for Elon Musk by Tesla’s shareholders is not a prize for technological genius, but a fitting tribute to the services he has rendered to capital and its ruthless logic. On paper, this pay package is tied to goals such as producing robotaxis and humanoid robots and boosting car sales, but what lies behind these targets is nothing other than the deepening of exploitation, environmental destruction and class repression.
In his role as one of the officials of the US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Musk made it abundantly clear that the profits of capitalists take precedence over human lives: he sacked tens of thousands of federal employees on the pretext of “low productivity” in order to cut “unnecessary” government spending. Yet when it comes to his own case, there is no upper limit to the “necessity” of personal profit. This is precisely the logic of capital: austerity for the masses, limitless rewards for the capitalist elite.
The targets set for obtaining this astronomical package – such as pushing Tesla’s market value to 8.5 trillion dollars – are only achievable by replacing millions of workers with machines, robots and artificial intelligence. The promise to produce one million robotaxis and one million humanoid robots is not a herald of progress, but a warning of mass lay-offs, the deskilling of workers, and mounting pressure on those who remain to accept lower wages and harsher working conditions.
These projects also require a massive expansion in the extraction of rare metals, which will not only intensify environmental crises, but also drag competition between capitalist blocs into political and even military confrontation.
Machines, robots and technology, within the framework of capitalism, are not instruments of welfare but instruments of exploitation. Musk, with his wholehearted support for Trump, far-right movements and neo-fascist parties, is the perfect embodiment of the link between technology and class domination. Only by smashing this unequal system and replacing it with a humane order based on the principle of “from each according to their ability, to each according to their need” can we free the machine from the chains of capital.
The defeat of far-right candidates backed by Trump in the recent US elections, and the uprising of millions of people in the streets of dozens of cities, show that this demand is the real aspiration of humanity. The road to genuine socialism runs through the conscious organisation and action of the masses.
