On Wednesday, the prosecutor of Ahvaz in Khuzestan province announced: “Indictments have been issued ‘as swiftly as possible’ against 23 individuals accused of ‘espionage’ for Israel.”
According to Iranian media, this regime operative claimed these individuals “targeted national security” and added that they had “carried out subversive acts in the province under various guises, collected intelligence for the enemy, supported propaganda against the Islamic Republic, engaged in psychological operations, spread false news, and sought to undermine national and psychological security.”
If these individuals were truly Israeli spies, their presence on social media and their alleged efforts to destabilise the regime would have already cost this servile prosecutor his life. The agents of Mossad would have had a very different mission in Iran—planned well in advance, eliminating senior commanders of the Islamic Republic at the very first moment.
In this light, such baseless accusations cannot deter the people’s struggle to realise a humane society free from the Islamic regime.
These days, the Islamic Republic’s only recourse in its attempts to intimidate the population is to fall back on the threadbare accusation of “spying for Israel.” To strike a blow at this degenerate theocracy—one that couldn’t even protect its top military officials or nuclear scientists—we must turn social media, the political arena, the streets, neighbourhoods, and workplaces into spaces of protest and resistance.
This regime’s desperate attempt to contain the storm unleashed by Israel’s attacks on its infrastructure is futile. People have already seen, in the clearest terms, the regime’s impotence. This very political and social moment offers us the opportunity to organise ourselves against the regime with maximum force.
Let every arrest serve as a spark for protest. Let us not allow the regime’s crimes to be hidden behind the smoke of ceasefire diplomacy, nor allow the governments of the world to close their eyes. The stage of resistance is ablaze—let us fan the flames.
