Mohammad-Hassan Aboutorabi-Fard, Tehran’s Friday Prayer Leader, declared: “The Supreme Leader’s historic leadership turned Iran into the axis of power in the Islamic world and left Israel and its allies in a fragile and vulnerable position.”
The Islamic Republic’s propaganda machine has whirred back to life in the wake of its blackest days, now trying to portray a feeble Khamenei as a figure of might and resolve. It doesn’t matter to this machine where the Commander-in-Chief disappeared to for two weeks while Israel ruled the skies over Iran. Nor do the mourners at the Supreme Leader’s court care that dozens of senior regime commanders were reduced to ash in a matter of days.
This defeated regime is making one final push to convince society that it remains a force to be feared—capable of exacting brutal revenge. But before they can intimidate the people, they’ll need to reassemble the shattered statue of Khamenei. They’ll need to piece together the pulverised remains of their commanders and sculpt a monument of power out of the rubble—just to suggest they still have poison in their fangs.
But this hollow performance of strength falls painfully short. There is no foundation for authority left in this regime. True power in any government depends on certain conditions: economic stability, for one. A regime drowning in endless crises and runaway inflation—unable to provide water, electricity or gas, or to pay meagre public-sector wages—is sitting atop a time bomb.
A functioning state must also possess some political coherence, some internal consensus behind a unified leadership. The Islamic Republic has none.
It also helps to have strong international relations. Here, too, the regime is in deep crisis. All signs point to a government in its most vulnerable phase yet. And the social consequence of this profound weakness will not remain dormant for long—we will soon see it explode in mass protests, economic uprisings, and popular revolt.
