Hossein Shariatmadari, editor-in-chief of the hardline daily newspaper Kayhan, wrote: “Were it not for special security considerations, the name of the individual now replacing the commander of the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters (of the General Staff of Armed Forces) —following the death of Ali Shadmani—would have been publicly announced.”
It is worth recalling that after Israel assassinated Gholam-Ali Rashid, commander of the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, his successor Ali Shadmani was also eliminated in Israeli strikes.
Despite its posturing, the Islamic Republic reveals its existential frailty more and more each day. Just days ago, the regime’s decrepit parliament passed a law declaring that any protest or political expression by the people amounts to “waging war against God,” with critics of the regime facing charges of collaboration with Mossad—punishable by severe sentences and even execution. Yet it is precisely during this hollow display of power that Kayhan inadvertently exposes the regime’s fragility, admitting that it is unable to publish the name of the successor to the two fallen commanders of one of its most significant military institutions.
It is unprecedented globally for one of the most expensive and ostensibly elite military arms of a state—an institution designed to haunt its enemies’ dreams and deliver death from the shadows—to be so ineffectual and impotent, and to have this feebleness publicly revealed in the press.
Such an admission of helplessness can serve to bolster the morale of those resisting the Islamic Republic. It can invigorate opposition to state repression and enhance the public’s will to fight. It can unite society across all fronts—economic, social, and political. The regime’s ability to suppress dissent is undoubtedly a key pillar of its survival. But at a time when its leadership is scattered and its commanders are seeking refuge like hunted prey, we can amplify the power of protest by building the broadest civil, political, and resistance-based organisations. A united, organised society with clear political and social demands rooted in human dignity can overcome any foe. Each one of us can join or form a resistance collective. We must remember that the strength of the collective is exponentially greater than the sum of our individual efforts. Let us form our own cells, networks, and institutions. Our slogan must be: “All power to the people.” The Worker-communist Party of Iran stands with you. You are not alone.
