At the funeral of Mohammad-Mehdi Aboei and Ali Karbassi—killed by regime forces in Hamedan—mourners chanted a slogan that cut through decades of state propaganda: “They lie—it’s not America, the enemy is right here.” The words, uttered at a moment of grief, speak volumes about the public mood. Even as the United States launched strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities in support of Israel, hundreds of people in Hamedan saw through the regime’s narrative. After 46 years, the propaganda machine has lost its grip.
This slogan has surfaced repeatedly over the years, shouted in protests before the very eyes of regime enforcers. But now, amid American military strikes, its symbolic weight has grown exponentially. It reveals a truth the regime cannot suppress: no matter what happens abroad, the people do not forget who their real enemy is. And just as the Islamic Republic remains laser-focused on its war against its own people, even in the throes of military conflict, the people have not lost sight of who is oppressing them.
Another key takeaway is the utter bankruptcy of the regime’s nationalist rhetoric and its call for unity in the face of foreign aggression. The chant in Hamedan exposed how hollow all that “Iran, Iran” posturing has become. Replacing Islamic mourning chants with the anthem “Ey Iran” during Ashura ceremonies doesn’t fool anyone. The people have not united with the state—they stand in direct opposition to it.
