When will the “trigger mechanism” finally be pulled?- Journal -8 July 2025

Hamish Falconer, the UK’s Deputy Foreign Minister for the Middle East, has said Britain will hold the Islamic Republic accountable for its malign activities. Emphasising the need to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, he stated that the UK is actively considering the activation of the “trigger mechanism” against Tehran. “The trigger mechanism is an important tool,” he said.

A memorable scene in the classic film The Good, the Bad and the Ugly shows a man warning his adversary, gun raised: “When you have to shoot, shoot—don’t talk.” It’s a fitting description of how European governments are handling the snapback mechanism. All this talking—while the enemy moves first and pulls the trigger.

Previously, France’s Foreign Minister told Le Monde that unless Iran cooperates in curbing its nuclear programme, the three European powers are prepared to initiate the trigger mechanism.

But what more must the Islamic Republic do to prove that it is a regime built to destroy life? What else must it say to make clear that terrorism courses through its veins? How much louder must it speak before your cautious governments realise that while this regime survives, millions across Iran and the region are in peril?

We keep hearing the same absurd formula: if Iran continues its terrorism in Europe, we’ll consider sanctioning the IRGC; if there’s another hostage crisis, we might recall our ambassadors. If… if…

How much longer will you wait? How many more crimes must this regime commit before you take one decisive step—boycott these terrorists, shut down their embassies, sever political ties? Just once, show courage and solidarity with the people of Iran, who are actively engaged in the overthrow of these criminals.

The regime’s longevity is not simply a result of repression. It also thrives on your fear—your fear that the people might rise up and take charge of their own destiny. And so, it is not only the regime that stands in our way, but your hesitance too.

We, the people of Iran, are reaching out to the civilised and humane people of the world. We ask you to become a lever of pressure against your governments—to push them to end their appeasement of the Islamic Republic.
