Esmail Khatib, Iran’s Minister of Intelligence, recently commented on a series of executions carried out over the past month on charges of espionage. The arrested individuals, he said, “will receive the punishment they deserve.”

In the wake of the Israeli attack, hundreds of citizens were arrested on charges ranging from espionage to actions against national security. Under torture, they were coerced into “confessing” that they were agents of Mossad or other “foreign intelligence services.”

The truth is that infiltration runs rampant through every layer of the regime’s institutions. But these infiltrators are not ordinary citizens from the streets. They are seasoned, professional spies embedded within the Islamic Republic’s intelligence, security, and political apparatus—operatives who monitor the leadership’s every move and have access to the regime’s most sensitive secrets.

The purpose behind these executions—and the threats of further executions of alleged spies—has nothing to do with purging infiltrators from within state institutions. In the shadow of a devastating military defeat and political collapse, the Islamic Republic has been exposed for what it is: a humiliated and decrepit regime. Even before this latest military strike, it was under constant attack from society, unable to suppress the popular resistance through any means. In these exceptional circumstances, the regime has turned to executions for espionage, desperately attempting to save face through sheer brutality.

But can this policy force people to quietly endure deeper poverty and despair? Will more executions convince women to comply with compulsory hijab laws and abandon their struggle for bodily autonomy? Will the threat of death silence social media activists? Can this tactic transform Iranian society into a tranquil island for the regime’s criminal elite?
