The resolution to designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation was passed by the Belgian parliament on Friday, 18 July, with an overwhelming majority: 135 votes in favour, 14 abstentions, and none opposed.

The passage of this resolution marks yet another humiliation for the Islamic Republic, one that has not gone unnoticed by other governments. The regime is in a state of complete political collapse, a condition that emboldens foreign states to confront this terrorist regime with increased confidence.

Consider the alternative: had the Islamic Republic managed to maintain its image as a dominant force in the region, with its proxies destabilising not just the Middle East but all of Europe, we might instead be witnessing European governments capitulating to Tehran’s demands.

Another looming threat for the Islamic Republic is the potential activation of the so-called ‘snapback mechanism’, which would automatically reimpose all UN sanctions on Iran. Given the regime’s dire condition, this is a serious possibility—one that could financially cripple the Islamic Republic and deal a devastating political blow.

Following the Belgian parliament’s resolution, the Belgian government is now obliged to pursue the matter at the European Union level and work to bring other member states on board with the decision.

Though this is a significant step—one that all governments ought to take—our demands as the Iranian people go beyond the designation of the IRGC as a terrorist entity. The Islamic Republic is itself a terrorist and anti-human regime that has sustained its disgraceful existence through bloodshed over the past 46 years. It has simultaneously set the region ablaze by exporting state-sponsored terrorism and established vast terror networks across Europe.

What we demand is the political isolation of the Islamic Republic: the closure of its embassies, and the immediate severance of diplomatic ties with the criminals who rule Iran.
