Hamidreza Rostegar, head of Tehran’s Chamber of Guilds, remarked on the quality of flour used for the bread consumed by the public: “The high-quality flour that lets people taste real bread is certainly not the same as what is distributed to bakeries.”

Life here has no flavour. Neither laughter nor joy retains its natural taste. Leisure and travel are devoid of real delight—if, indeed, anyone can even dream of travel amid such poverty and hardship. Life holds no savour when millions of child labourers roam the streets, lost and vulnerable to constant danger. Life turns bitter when women and even young girls are forced into sex work just to earn a handful of cash. It reeks of rot when the vast majority of people work merely to survive, all while earning wages far below the poverty line.

This is the bitter taste of life: being forced to watch millions of young people—who could have lived joyfully—fall into the deadly grip of addiction, with no means of rescuing them. This life, with its missing bread, undrinkable water, power outages, and the ever-present threat of the noose, has become synonymous with physical destruction and psychological torment for us.

And yet, amid this decay wrought by the Islamic regime, a different scent begins to waft through the air—the scent of the ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’ revolution, a movement promising to cleanse this filth-ridden Islamic house. People are, in every way they can, removing more bricks from the rotting edifice of this theocratic regime.

This hope for life is powerful and within reach. We can build a more beautiful, humane world. All the signs in Iranian society point to a Herculean effort to create a free, equal, and joyful community. Hands are joining together to build this new human world—one in which the only taste left to us will be that of bread, freedom, and liberation.
