“Down with the dictator” echoed through the Ali Abad and Khazaneh metro stations in Tehran. On Wednesday, 23 July, a group of angry citizens voiced their rage at the authorities after long delays by chanting this slogan in the heart of the capital’s transport system.
The night before, amid repeated power outages, similar chants resounded across Tehran. On the evening of Tuesday, 22 July 2025, as large parts of the capital were once again plunged into darkness, residents in various neighbourhoods took to the streets with cries of “Down with the dictator,” voicing their growing discontent.
In Sabzevar, two consecutive nights of street protests lit up the city. The roar of the people’s rage grows louder and more forceful by the day. The regime is paralysed with fear. This population knows from experience how to claim the streets as their own—and how to hold their ground.
The regime is in a red-alert state. Its sirens of self-preservation have been sounding for a long time. Its Supreme Leader, terrified, has yet to emerge from his bunker. The Islamic Republic’s usual excuses—fighting foreign enemies, uncovering spies, militarising streets, homes, and workplaces—no longer hold water.
The people stand at the edge of a terrifying abyss of poverty and despair. On the other side: the Islamic Republic’s armed forces, ready to fire. The only path forward is a bolder, more coordinated assault against a regime that can only survive through misery, imprisonment, and murder. Rather than fall into the void, the people are choosing resistance—a path toward a better life.
These mass mobilisations have astonished even those participating in them, and the world continues to marvel at the Iranian people’s unity, resilience, and courage.
Through the lens of these very protests, we can once again glimpse the proud days of the ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’ uprising. With the lessons of past struggles in mind, and with even greater unity, we can topple this regime of destruction. “Down with the dictator” must ring not only through Tehran’s night air, but across the whole country, as it did in the streets of Sabzevar.
