“With the forced deportation of Afghan nationals, Tehran is now facing a serious shortage of street cleaners!” Naser Amani, a member of Tehran’s city council, declared: “Following recent deportations, we’ve experienced a sharp drop in sanitation workers. If this continues, the city’s cleanliness will face a serious crisis.”

He added: “One contractor in a district had 185 workers. Now only 35 remain – ۳۰ of them still Afghan nationals – and sanitation levels are far from adequate. The municipality has issued recruitment calls for street cleaners, but in one area, only a single Iranian has applied.”

What better news could so thoroughly expose the lies of the Islamic Republic’s fascists – and of its right-wing opposition, including monarchists? What clearer proof could there be that the assault on Afghans, their deportation, and their displacement is an assault on society as a whole?

For four decades, the labour, energy, and lives of millions of Afghans have been exploited in Iran to fill the hardest and most underpaid jobs. And in return, what have these honourable people received? A barrage of slurs and fascist propaganda, aimed at fabricating the image of a criminal horde. The regime’s media machine has spent decades pinning every minor or major offence on Afghan migrants, while never acknowledging their contribution to the country’s social wealth.

For years, economic and social hardships have been scapegoated onto this most marginalised group – so that the regime could cover up its own plunder and corruption. But Iran’s political and economic reality makes the central, invaluable role of Afghan workers clearer than ever. And in this critical moment, it is our collective duty to defend the lives and dignity of these honourable people. We must oppose the regime’s violence and deportations in every possible way.

The issue is not simply that these workers contribute to public welfare or production. Defending the full social rights of Afghan migrants in Iran is, above all, a defence of unconditional human dignity and identity.
