Masoud Pezeshkian, in his latest speech to opponents of talks with the US, said: “Well, what do you want to do, fight? Fine, we fight, but if it happens again, we fix it again, and again they hit us. Someone says don’t negotiate — fine, but what do we do instead? These are not issues to approach emotionally.” He stressed that he would take no action without his leader’s permission.

These remarks lay bare the Islamic Republic’s helplessness and have sparked fierce reactions among the regime’s factions. Aziz Ghazanfari, deputy political commander of the IRGC, said foreign policy is not the place to air every truth — meaning the regime must not publicly admit to anything that could be seen as weakness. Others insisted that negotiating with the US on its terms amounts to surrender.

The regime is now in a crisis with no way back and no way forward. Continuing the political and economic deadlock without an agreement with the West will intensify both internal and external pressure, while accepting the other side’s conditions means strategic retreat and a crushing defeat.

The stalemate has deepened with just two weeks left before the UK, France and Germany’s deadline for a nuclear deal. Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi has said the Islamic Republic would accept “limits on the development of its nuclear programme” for a set period in exchange for the lifting of US sanctions. But it is clear Europe and the US will demand more, including on ballistic missiles and support for proxy forces.

In such circumstances, the regime’s strategic and identity-based policies must be challenged in the streets. Mobilising people against the Islamic Republic’s identity politics should centre on halting the nuclear project, ending support for proxies, redirecting military and religious budgets to public welfare, and abandoning anti-Western and anti-Israel policies.

All pro-freedom forces, protest movements and social activists must unite and coordinate to wage a nationwide struggle against the entire regime, ending the cycle of poverty, misery and crises that is destroying people’s lives.

Today, convergence and mobilisation around these goals — including advancing the ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’ movement and delivering the final blow to the Islamic Republic — will be key to turning popular uprisings into revolutionary victory.
