Fatemeh Mohajerani, spokesperson for the Pezeshkian administration, said at a press conference on Tuesday, 12 August: “When the main ingredient of bread, namely flour, becomes more expensive, and the wages and insurance costs for bakery workers increase, it is only natural that bread will become more expensive.”

The Islamic Republic sees itself as the master and the Iranian people as its serfs. The serf labours on the landlord’s fields and in return is thrown a scrap of bread to keep alive, so that the khan and his offspring can accumulate more wealth.

Speaking for all those looters of life ensconced in power, Mohajerani — like an employer forever flaunting their losses before the workers — tells the public that “flour has become expensive and therefore bread is more expensive, and for that reason people must pay more for the finished price of bread.” The whole affair is nothing but clerical and governmental trickery.

The Islamic Republic claims ownership over all assets and natural resources — oil, gas, mines, forests, seas — which are public property and belong to all citizens. The state has no right to assert ownership over them.

When oil and gas are extracted in Iran, the proceeds should go into the people’s pockets, and the state should guarantee health care at the highest possible global standards for all citizens. It should also provide housing and adequate nutrition for everyone, especially when it has access to trillions of dollars in cash.

We must remember one thing: we do not beg for anything from any office-holder. If these social resources are not made available to all, the reason is simple — criminals, looters and capitalists are at the helm, and the repressive apparatus defends them.

With the overthrow of the Islamic Republic and the creation of a free and equal society run through the direct participation of all citizens, these social resources will be devoted to the well-being of everyone. Bread prices will be the least of it — the state will be responsible for meeting all people’s needs. In the first article of the constitution of a humane, socialist society, the comprehensive provision of life’s necessities for everyone, at the highest standards of today’s world, will be enshrined.
