Over a hundred humanitarian organizations, including Oxfam and Doctors Without Borders, have signed a joint letter urging Israel to “stop weaponizing the ban on aid entry,” warning that “famine in the region is worsening.” According to this letter, most major international NGOs have not been able to deliver even a single truck of vital, life-saving supplies to Gaza since March 2—six months ago.

A troubled and sorrowful conscience might say, “Oh, how terrible,” at the sight of death, hunger, and ruins that were once homes and hospitals. One can witness the countless sick, the wounded, the thirst and feel the pang of guilt, whispering, “Alas, there is nothing we can do.”

One can see lifeless children in their parents’ arms and feel a tear slip down the cheek. One can curse Netanyahu, wishing for justice to be swiftly served.

We can be angered at our own governments, silent in the face of Netanyahu’s crimes. Yes, we can feel grief, yet still eat breakfast, go to work, stop by the local bar after a long day, watch football with friends—and still carry that sorrow within us. Not out of pretense, but because this is the reality. Life goes on, even as devastation unfolds beside us. This is survival.

After all, Gaza is not around the corner. We can only watch this genocide unfold on television, wielding the most advanced weapons of war, and remain helplessly silent. Not entirely passive, however—we can occasionally join protests and witness arrests for supporting Palestinians whose lives have been ripped away.

It is a strange world. Two edges of an inhumane scissor strike at us: political Islam and the fascist terrorism of the Israeli government. And yet, we still cannot, with the combined will of the civilized world, shake the earth beneath the enemies of humanity and prevent the immense humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. But if we truly desire, we can. We must simply remember that we belong to one race—and that race is humanity.
