Nineteen of August marks World Humanitarian Day. 2024 was the deadliest year ever, with 383 aid workers killed and the UN calling it ‘a shameful testament’ to the indifference of the international community, and warning that the toll of humanitarian workers killed this year is equally alarming.
This news item refers to only one atrocity against humanity. More than eight billion people inhabit this beautiful planet, yet it is no exaggeration to say that seven billion of them are deprived of basic human rights. Cities where the dream of a glass of clean water separates life from death – a dream that may never be fulfilled.
Human beings who do not even have dry bread to eat, while human rights organisations issue constant warnings about global hunger and millions dying from lack of food.
People who cannot fathom why wars erupt over their heads, wars that swallow tens and hundreds of thousands of lives. Prisoners crushed in the hands of ruling executioners. Women subjected to rape, murder and gender oppression.
Human rights that exclude children, workers and political or religious dissidents. World Humanitarian Day tells us only that humanity today not only has no rights, but that its very existence is plundered daily, turning life into an unending nightmare for billions. People deprived of healthcare, welfare and dignity, while anti-human governments gun down those who demand a better life.
These are not natural disasters or divine calamities. They are the product of those who rule the world. To escape this situation, society must wrest control from these anti-human forces. The fight to preserve human life, to protect all living beings and nature itself, is the task of civilised, socialist and freedom-loving people. Ending wage slavery and placing power in the hands of the people is the key to humanity’s liberation.
