On Tuesday 26 August, the Australian government announced the expulsion of Ahmad Sadeghi, Iran’s ambassador, along with three other regime diplomats—terrorists in all but name. Reports confirm that Islamic Republic operatives were directly involved in at least two terrorist attacks last year: the arson of a Jewish café in Sydney and an attack on a synagogue in Melbourne in December. Canberra also stated it would designate the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) a terrorist organisation.
The Islamic Republic’s embassies, not only in Australia but worldwide, have long been central to directing terrorist operations against Iranian opposition groups. Time and again, the regime’s bloody hand has been exposed in international bombings targeting Jewish centres.
Yet Western governments, despite the protests of Iranian opposition groups, have never fully cut ties with the regime’s Islamist terrorists. They have failed to shut down the regime’s spy centres and have avoided a full diplomatic break. This policy of appeasement has only emboldened Tehran. Over its shameful history, the regime has carried out more than 200 terrorist operations abroad. It has taken Western nationals hostage, while its proxies in Western cities parade under the regime’s flag, carrying posters of terrorists like Qassem Soleimani.
Australia’s government insisted the expulsions were “not political” but purely security-driven. That is a major blunder. The Islamic Republic’s terrorism is inherently political; it cannot be separated from its diplomacy.
With a terrorist regime, the only policy is to cut relations entirely. Anything less leaves the door ajar, harming Iranians and the wider world. The message from Iran’s movement for overthrow is clear: break off diplomatic ties with the Islamic Republic decisively.
