This slogan, chanted rhythmically at a rally three days ago in Shiraz, speaks volumes about the mood of Iranian society. The protest was against water and electricity shortages. In other countries, protests over such issues would stay limited to those grievances. In Iran, it is different.
Demonstrations against blackouts, water shortages, inflation, pitiful wages, environmental destruction—each becomes a pretext for something larger: revolution. These immediate problems are urgent, but over decades, people’s political experience has grown to where they know even minimal demands are tied to the historic task of overthrowing the regime. HEPCO (Heavy Equipment Construction Company) workers sing in the streets that they will not live under oppression. Pensioners protesting economic deprivation chant against the regime’s nuclear policies. In Sanandaj, mourners honour environmental martyrs with cries of “Woman, Life, Freedom”. In Hamedan, at funerals for loved ones killed in a so-called “foreign attack”, the people chant: “Our enemy is right here.” Resistance to compulsory veiling and executions is also directly part of resistance to the regime and its ideological foundations.
Every struggle in Iran today – whether by defrauded investors or bazaar merchants, workers or teachers, defenders of children’s rights or women, students, lawyers, writers, artists, LGBTQ people, atheists, or religious believers – has a shared political essence: opposition to the regime and its pillars of repression and ideology. This common political thread unites society in deep solidarity. It defines the shared goal and the shared path to reach it: overthrow through strikes, protests, uprisings, revolution. The more strongly this political essence surfaces in protests, the greater the solidarity, the more paralysed the regime becomes.
