According to a new report released on 2 September by Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, since 13 June more than 20,000 people have been arrested in Iran: political dissidents, human rights defenders, journalists, social media users, families of protest victims, foreign nationals, Afghans, members of ethnic minorities such as Baluch and Kurds, as well as followers of the Baháʼí, Christian and Jewish faiths.
On 25 June, state media reported the arrest of more than 700 people accused of ‘collaborating with Israel’.
At least nine men have been executed on charges of political offences or spying for Israel. A bill to expand the death penalty is awaiting approval by the Guardian Council.
On 16 July, in Khomein, four members of one family—Mohammad Hossein Sheikhi, Mahboubeh Sheikhi, Farzaneh Heydari, and their three-year-old daughter Raha Sheikhi—were killed by security forces.
Religious minorities have been heavily targeted. Baháʼís have been accused of spying for Israel, with dozens arrested, interrogated and having their property confiscated.
At least 54 Christians have been arrested since June, and at least 35 Jews have been interrogated for maintaining contact with relatives in Israel.
Mass arrests, summary trials, rushed executions, discrimination against Afghans, and unlawful killings at checkpoints are all part of this crackdown.
In Sistan and Baluchistan, two women—Khan-Bibi Bamri and Lali Bamri—were killed and ten others wounded. In Fars, Mehran Dastournejad was arrested and beaten. In Mazandaran, Nouyan Hejazi and Lova Samimi were detained. In Hamedan, Alireza Karbasi and Mehdi Abaei were killed.
The two organisations called for the immediate halt of executions, the release of those arbitrarily detained, and guarantees to prevent enforced disappearances, torture and ill-treatment. They emphasised that other governments must pursue Iranian officials under universal jurisdiction for these crimes.
Every sector of society is represented in this list. If repression targets all, then unity at that same scale is essential. The revolutionary force is of unimaginable scope, and Iran’s revolution will be one of the most comprehensive the world has ever seen.
