Somayeh Rashidi, a 42-year-old political prisoner, died on Thursday. She lost her life because she was denied medical care in Qarchak prison. Rashidi, one of those detained during the Woman, Life, Freedom uprising, threw herself back into activism against the Islamic Republic after her release, only to be arrested again for writing slogans against the regime. She suffered from epilepsy, yet her illness did not deter her to fight against one of the most brutal governments in the world. The authorities were fully aware of her severe condition, but denied her medical care and chose to let her suffer in jail and ultimately killed her.
Her death has provoked a wave of protests among political prisoners. The deliberate killing of Somayeh only strengthens the revolutionary spirit of our people. She paid the price of freedom with her life. By continuing the struggle to overthrow this plague-ridden government, we will gain freedom and plant the seeds of equality. Dictators have no destiny other than downfall.
