When the United States refused to issue a visa for Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian Authority president, to attend the annual UN General Assembly, the organisation allowed him to deliver his speech remotely, by video.
In his address, Abbas pressed for a two-state solution for Palestine and Israel while condemning Hamas’s terrorism and its attack on Israel on 7 October 2023. He stressed that Hamas would have no place in a Palestinian government and must be disarmed. But even this was too much for the Trump administration, because Abbas supports the creation of a Palestinian state.
By contrast, Ahmad al-Sharaa – former leader of the Islamist group Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham and “transitional president” of Syria, with a bloody record to his name – was allowed into the UN. The US does not concern itself with the records of war criminals, as long as they play by its rules. Al-Sharaa now says he will renounce cross-border terrorism and devote his life to Islamising Syria. This, for Washington, poses no problem – just as the Taliban’s rule does not. Islamist terrorism is the offspring of US policy. Let us not forget: freedom and liberation will only be won by freedom-loving, egalitarian and humane societies.
