At a gathering titled “Movement for Justice-Oriented Development in Education” in Hormozgan province, Masoud Pezeshkian declared: “The one who has sanctioned us is ourselves. How do other countries, without fuel, oil and gas, survive merely by buying them? We have it all, and yet we are hungry.”
First, this servant of Khamenei must be told: you are not hungry. All the wealth of society is in your possession. The clergy, MPs and the regime’s repressive forces are not hungry. Your sons and daughters—aghazadehs (the privileged offspring of the ruling elite)—are not only free from hunger, but live such extravagant, luxury lives on the stolen wealth of the people that the world looks on in astonishment. In truth, far from hunger, you are bursting from overindulgence. When you fall ill, you are treated with the most advanced medical equipment, supplied with drugs from the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies. And at no cost to you.
In Pezeshkian’s words, there is also a message aimed at settling internal scores. He wants “death to America” pushed into the background of the regime’s politics. But he knows well that a large section of the ruling class cannot abandon anti-Western and anti-American rhetoric. To retreat would mean losing the regime’s network of regional militias and forfeiting its main card against the West.
If the regime dropped its anti-Americanism and hostility to the “enemy state,” it could no longer arrest and suppress the Iranian people on a thousand pretexts. For its survival, it must constantly manufacture an external enemy. If it steps back, it would have no means of controlling a society thirsting for freedom and emancipation—and would have no choice but to raise the white flag before the people of Iran.
The Islamic Republic cannot, like other governments, rely solely on the exploitation of its people, build a capitalist economy and profit from it. This is a regime of kleptocrats and profiteers of sanctions, floundering until it is finally swept away by the people’s revolution. The path to a humane life lies through the Woman, Life, Freedom revolution: a revolution against terrorism in all its forms, against economic and political inequality. Such a revolution will not be at war with the world, but will win the support of the vast majority of humanity. The coming revolution in Iran will bear precisely these hallmarks.
