Trump and Netanyahu suddenly announced Trump’s 20-point “peace plan” to decide the fate of devastated Gaza and its people—an announcement that drew the world’s media attention.

We live in strange times. In such times, it is the direct perpetrators of genocide and child killings in Gaza—Netanyahu, with his chief backer Trump—who suddenly declare a “peace plan” for the very people they had sought to erase. The same Trump who once aimed to cleanse Gaza of Palestinians and turn it into a casino playground for the region’s billionaires now presents himself as a peacemaker. It is easy to see that these two war criminals issued this “plan” under pressure from global public opinion—from mass demonstrations of over 100,000 in Berlin to widespread protests across the United States and Israel itself.

Regardless of Trump’s motives, even if only a few points of this 20-article plan were actually carried out—such as halting the war, opening humanitarian aid corridors, and beginning reconstruction—there might at least be a brief reprieve in which the displaced, starving, and thirsty people of Gaza could draw breath.

But any plan that seeks to guarantee peace, calm and security for Palestinians at any level must include the creation of an independent Palestinian state alongside Israel. Netanyahu, ostensibly a partner in Trump’s “peace plan,” has openly declared that Palestinian statehood has no place in it.

Politically, Trump’s “peace plan” is designed to secure and cement the hegemony of the US, the West and Israel in the region. It has already gained the backing of most “Islamic and Arab” governments, several Western states, and Mahmoud Abbas, head of the Palestinian Authority. Predictably, the Islamic Republic of Iran will attempt to obstruct it—but Tehran no longer has the power it once wielded.

The first step towards rescuing the people of Gaza at the most basic level is the establishment of a Palestinian state free of reactionary Islamic currents, alongside the state of Israel. To date, two forces have blocked this prospect: right-wing movements in Israel and the camp of political Islam led by the Islamic Republic of Iran. The stronger the protest movements across the world, in Iran and in Israel itself, will be in cutting off the hands of these two reactionary blocs, the closer Palestinians will be to liberation.
