The execution of seven political prisoners — Ali Mojdam, Moein Khanfari, Seyed Salem Mousavi, Mohammadreza Moghaddam, Adnan Al-Boushoukeh (Ghabishavi), Habib Deris in Ahvaz’s Sepidar prison, and Saman Mohammadi Khayareh in Ghezel Hesar prison — on Saturday, 4th of October, is a chilling alarm for us all.
These executions, though carried out from weakness and desperation, expose a regime that, despite its decay, refuses to retreat from killing — unless forced to do so. The surge in executions in recent months, culminating in the mass killing of seven political prisoners in a single day, makes this plain.
Just as the ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’ revolution compelled the regime to retreat on the issue of compulsory hijab, the struggle against the death penalty — though different in form — can achieve a similar defeat for the Islamic Republic. Through collective pressure and organised resistance, executions can be halted or dramatically reduced, even if this barbaric punishment remains on paper.
One path toward this goal is the broad reinforcement of the unprecedented ‘Tuesdays Against Execution’ campaign. The campaign is now active in more than fifty prisons across Iran, where inmates stage hunger strikes every Tuesday to protest the killings. Many families of death-row prisoners also join the protests outside the prisons.
Support for this campaign, both inside and outside Iran, must grow. Every sector of society — teachers, students, workers, farmers, women and youth — must stand behind it. Active solidarity sends a clear message to the Islamic Republic: it faces a united people saying “no” to executions and demanding an end to this machinery of death.
Expanding support for ‘Tuesdays Against Execution’ is the most effective way to strengthen the anti-execution movement. The regime holds thousands of prisoners captive; only a united, mass response can force it to stop this crime.
