On Friday, 17 October 2025, Prince Andrew returned his royal titles following allegations of sexual assault. As everyone keeps stressing, he did so voluntarily; in reality however, he had little choice. The royal family and the media alike now strive to portray this as an act of noble sacrifice for which ordinary people should be grateful.
All this pageantry aims to deflect attention from Andrew’s links to convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein. The publication this week of Virginia Giuffre’s memoir – she took her own life in April – revives the scandal. In it, she describes how, at seventeen, she was forced to have sex with the prince on three occasions. He apparently even guessed her age right when he first met her, just a little bit older than his own daughters he mentioned in that encounter.
The royal palace is outraged that the sordid headlines about Prince Andrew steal the spotlight away from other royals, like the King himself who will be visiting Pope Leo this week. Could there be anything more important I ask you? They would have us believe that voluntarily relinquishing royal honours is the harshest punishment possible for a prince – so that we forget that he got away scot-free. The royal family’s wealth enabled Andrew to pay the settlement to Giuffre – money that saved him from having to stand trial. He even had to sell his Swiss Chalet. What an outrage and inconvenience!
In a lame attempt at damage control, the palace has now barred him from attending the family’s Christmas gathering. Boohoo. They will wait for the storm to pass, and in a few years, who will still speak of it? Meanwhile Andrew is free to continue his life in luxury – as do the many other wealthy, powerful men entangled in Epstein’s network of sexual abuse. To this day, they remain free to do as they please. Should we not expect such a world to be overturned?
